2023 RI Girls Volleyball - Top of the Mountain Results plus Awards…
11/17/23
Coach Reslow’s final prediction score for the 2023 RI Girls Playoffs: 20 - 8…not too shabby, though I was sure off in the finals. Only getting one out of the four right is some suspect play…but again, that’s why they play the games!
North Kingstown kept Coventry at bay and got themselves another title. Two out of the last three have gone to the Skippers, with a minor break in the action when South Kingstown won it a couple of years ago…and it doesn’t look like they’re going to slow down any time soon. They are the current Rhode Island girls’ volleyball dynasty and the bar of which every team is measured. They do lose the player of the year and their top oppo to graduation and some solid role players…but that’s it. Only question really, is who has hands in 2024.
East Providence decided to mimic what Chariho did last year and not suffer defeat once in the 2023 campaign. The Townies held the Clips in check on route to a three-set sweep, securing the title and back-to-back undefeated seasons (Chariho and East Providence) in the D2 world. The Townies lose their top middle, starting libero, and starting outside hitter to graduation which could change the dynamic going forward, however, they still have the player of the year returning and a strong supporting cast. I’m kind of eager to see if next year’s D2 champ can score a flawless season now…
Burrillville, from the top rope, stuns Tolman in a five-set barn burner. The Broncos battled through the match and ended up on the right side of the contest with strong net play and some timely serving moments, especially toward the end of the contest. Broncos took control in the fifth-set and didn’t look back after seven points! Certainly, a great feeling for a side that had a tough season in the 2022 campaign in D2. Broncos do lose their top pin to graduation, but the player of the year returns and that alone will be a piece to build on.
Providence Country Day at one point in the 2023 season was four and four with plenty of questions. By the end of the campaign, PCD once again stood atop the mountain. Shea certainly had a great season, but the signs of cracks in the dam began to show late in the year. Meanwhile, PCD’s level increased with each week. Armed with top servers and the player of the year, the Knights survived a first set loss in the final to take the next three and accept the crown. Should be interesting to see what next year brings as the player of the year plus the setter and libero all graudate.
D4: (2) Providence Country Day are your Champs! - The Queens of Ace got it done!
D3: (B2) Burrillville High School are your Champs! - Broncos pull the upset!
D2: (1) East Providence High School are your Champs! - Townies prove no one compares!
D1: (1) North Kingstown High School are your Champs! - Skippers remain the captains of the State!
