Week Seven…Bulldogs Bring the Boom!
5/19/24
But before I get into it today…
Some introspective thoughts…
I stood in a picture today. The church I attend, First Lutheran in East Greenwich celebrated its 150th anniversary. After the event was over, we all stood for a picture, that is to be framed and put in the basement of the church next to the framed pictures taken at 25th year, 50th year, 75th year, and 100th. I’ve stared at those pictures for a long time, every so often, and wondered to myself where those people may be now? Are any still walking the earth? What did they do with their lives? What brought them to that particular moment in time? Is all that is left now of them a picture in the basement of a church? I try to read the faces of those pictured… What were they thinking at that moment? How different was their scene to mine of today? Granted these are older person thoughts perhaps, but knowing that my picture will now be down there as well for the next inquisitive person who might stare at it and wonder…
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana! — Groucho Marx
Stop and take every moment in, if you can. It’s the adventures of life that matter most…and leave the pictures of your moments for the generations that come to observe in wonder…to whimsically ponder what you were all about…

ResV Team of the Week…
Pin- Charles Pincince (Cranston East) - Sir Charles takes a spot on the ResV team of the week as the Cranston East Bolts have a two-win week. Pincince has become a consistent standard…14 kills, 5 digs a match guy and he’s a major reason CE is the #2 team in the state.
Pin- Ryan Rathbun (North Kingstown) - Each week Rathbun has grown more and more of a weapon for the Skippers…culminating into the performance he gave this week. Rathbun was huge in the win over LaSalle, ensuring that teams cannot just load up on the left side attackers.
Middle- Quinlan Fahy (North Kingstown) - Arguably the top blocker in the state this season, Big Q posed another wall of a performance against the Rams in a match filled with plenty intrigue. 9 kills, 9 blocks against one of the top teams at the net says it all.
Middle- Cristian Caceres (Juanita Sanchez) - JS is back on the board for the top fifteen and plenty of it goes to the play of Caceres. With bounce, timing, and placement, Caceres is tough to stop in D3 and has his team ready to make a big playoff run.
Pin- Ephraim Abhulime (LaSalle Academy) - The most physically dominating guy in the state is finishing up a solid senior season playing out of position. Would easily be the most dominating middle, however instead he’s on the pin and just put up 24 kills on the top team in the state.
Setter- Austin Noel (Lincoln) - Arguably the top setter for attacking in the state. Many feel, and rightfully so, that McNamara is the key to Lincoln’s success. I’ve seen them play a bunch this season, and my pick is Noel. He puts up a hittable ball consistently, blocks well, and can attack viciously for a setter.
Libero- Brian Allen (Westerly) - On a big week for the Bulldogs, Allen quietly was a huge factor in their success. Handling a lot of the ball control duties as well as making solid plays defensively, Allen gave the Bulldogs opportunities for second and third swings that paid dividends.
ResV Top 15…
North Kingstown (14 - 1) - D1 is in real trouble. If you were to tell me that Harri would have a tough night and Ephraim would go for 24 and still the Skippers would come out on top? Well, I’d think that wasn’t plausible. It was, however, and it’s a testament to how this team is built. In that match, NK vs. LaSalle, the Skippers had Jaydan Yang setting (freshman) along with Finn Kearney (started out as a DS and part time Libero for this team) to start. LaSalle clearly game planned to slow down Harri and Tow and were pretty successful. Instead, Ryan Rathbun on the right came alive with 12 kills and 5 blocks, Dufour with 17 digs, and big Q goes for 9 kills and 9 blocks…result = Skippers victorious, and I thought LaSalle played pretty well. Yep, not sure what the other teams can do about this NK side. Too many good players and they’re not making many mistakes or enough mistakes to dislodge. Playoffs are a different animal, but I’m thinking it may be the same song for this Skipper team.
Cranston East (13 - 3) - The Bolts are interesting to me. I think if you ask people who the biggest threat to NK is, they’d say North Smithfield or LaSalle Academy. Why is that, and not Cranston East? Not sure. What I will say is that they’re built to cause discomfort from the service line, but they’re not overly dominate at the net. Perhaps that’s the thought pattern. NK can handle their serving and CE can’t seem to slow them down at the point of attack. Now what CE has…Pincince is a machine, Lora is a great compliment, Xum is solid and Yinn is having a monster year…meanwhile Dixon has come into his own, which all points to a team that means business. So, yeah, not sure why there is this feeling that CE is not the top rival to the crown. Should they hold the second seed come the playoffs…well, that home court advantage is going to make a lot of teams uncomfortable.
(+1) North Smithfield (12 - 4) - The Northmen get two out of three in week seven and the big one was taking down LaSalle at the Mountain Top. All the pieces are there to get it done on this team, so it was interesting to see them finally upend the Rams. You’ll note in today’s article that ResV ranks the top 15 players at each position…as well as ResV can manage it, anyway…and NS has the top setter and top middle on their team, as well as the second Libero. Caden Sullivan, Tom Matchett, and Ben Sousa respectively, along with Connor DeSousa and Carter Deslauriers on the pins…there is a lot to like about this team. They have a couple of uncharacteristic loses, one of those Cranston East ones seems off, but otherwise they’ve played everyone tough and only been on the wrong end four times. If they can take it to another gear, and I guess somehow avoid CE, or better yet exorcise that demon, a spot in the finals would not surprise me in the least.
(—1) LaSalle Academy (13 - 4) - There are few teams out there that have only four losses but feel like it’s an adventure every time they take the court…the Rams live in that world. At any particular moment, they could be an unstoppable force…dominating the net, scoring at will, and hitting you with blistering float serves that bring discomfort to the top of your resistance for it. In the same match, things could fall apart…bleeding points, players in the wrong spots, and errors galore. Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. Certainly, they’re more Jeckyll then Hyde as 13 wins to date are nothing to sneeze at, but when Hyde shows things go south for a bit. Rams also live through emotion which is a dangerous thing. High emotions can bring you golden gear if you can ride the lightening long enough, but also bring you crashing down with an implosion that can be talked about forever (See Toll Gate a lifetime ago). Ephraim, Lewis, and Evans will keep the Rams in any match, and Green is getting more and more comfortable on the pin. Defending champs still have it in them, just the plane is a little older and you hope none of the key lines give before they land.
(+1) Classical (10 - 6) - When I was coaching men’s volleyball at Johnson & Wales and we were on the cusp of breaking through in 2012, we had to beat a very talented Emmanuel team. That particular match was crucial as to that point in time the team was a nice sideshow to watch…but we needed a big win to make the conference take us seriously. I remember the line of the year for me, meaning I found myself saying it over and over, was “One time…” Sitting on the bench and we’re up one finishing set four and need a side out to push to set five…serve (One time, Alex), to the setter (One time, JJ), set to our all-conference pin (One time, Shawn)…Yes!!!!! Set five!!!!! This is where the Purple live today. They need a One time… match. They need to upend someone in the top four…a crowning achievement win for a team that is very fun to watch and does a lot of things well. James Men, Teddy Wallace, Jacob Agramonte, Ian Nascimento, Jasper Hoefferle, Jeraldy Herrera Santos, and crew…the time is now. One time!
(+3) Barrington (12 - 4) - The Falcons faltered twice and the Eagles benefit. Barrington, minus when they play Cranston West, is such an offense minded team. They run quick and precise in the middle with Ciummo and they run back row attacks almost more than anyone else in the state to success. Kelley has become close to a sure thing on the left, and Andsager, Park, and Oberacker have grown throughout the season and are playing good ball. Sang Min Park is setting at a high level and Luke Van Ness is doing what Luke Van Ness does night in and night out. So, with all that said, my gut is telling me this may be Barrington’s year…unless they see Cranston West. The Falcons seem to hold a spell over the Eagles that perhaps just cannot be broken. Look, I am all for exorcising demons and often times you finally overcome the team that owns you and you unlock championships (See Boston Red Sox over the New York Yankees in 2004). Still, if you can avoid them, do it, because sometimes you let sleeping dragons lie, no matter how much you want to defeat them.
(+1) East Providence (12 - 4) - First, and foremost, I am a huge DJ Lepine fan. Guy plays like a boxer in a ring. You may hit him, things may not go well, it may be curtains…he’ll give you the Rocky line…” I didn’t hear no bell!” and keep battling. Lepine is the pivot point for the Townies. Rodrigues has established himself as a premier pin in D2 and will be for the next two years…but Lepine makes this EP team roll. Now, I’m not the only person that thinks that. Every coach thinks that as well and does everything they can to disrupt DJ as it will lead to EP taking the loss. I write all of this to say, knowing DJ a little bit, that I like EP to do a lot of damage in the playoffs, especially if they host. Lepine, Rodrigues, and Loden Broe are the big three, surrounded by good players in Medeiros, Mimande, Calouro, and others. So, why not the Townies? It would not surprise me in the slightest if East Providence found themselves playing on a Saturday, on a college campus, in the middle of the day for all the marbles.
(—3) Cranston West (13 - 2) - Tough week for the still number one seed in D2 Falcons. Not exactly sure what happened except Westerly stunned them at their own barn and then they had to play at Lincoln in a back-to-back scenario that just overwhelmed. It takes a lot of luck to go undefeated, as well as skill, and it is not unusual at all for teams that go undefeated late into the year to suffer consecutive losses once the seal has been broken. Blood in the water and sharks and what not. This Cranston West side is still very dangerous, and this week seven adventure could just be a fluke. Chris Harvey has found a nice home on the left, while Christian Mak may be the best right-side blocker in the state. Ashton Mak is having a newcomer of the year type season, and the rest of the crew can still get it done, especially at home. So, though a week to forget, the key will be for the Falcons to regroup, pick up the pieces, and get mean for playoffs. All of that is well within their core so all should be ready.
(+1) Lincoln (11 - 4) - Watched the movie Top Secret a couple of weeks ago. It’s one of the top spoof movies out there and though dated, still quite funny. There is a moment in there where the main character meets the underground resistance in France. They go through the names of all the freedom fighters and one of them is named Deja Vu…he immediately quips, “Have we met before?” That’s the vibe when I think about Lincoln. This time, week seven last year, Lincoln was in the same boat…a strong second half of the season with an upset win or two just before a primed playoff run that brought them the cup. So, deja vu, here we are again. Many of the same cast are still in this play…Wayne McNamara on the pin, Austin Noel setting, Jackson Coulton in the middle, paired with a strong supporting cast of pins, middles, and Jacques Guerrier at the Libero spot. What Lincoln lacks in volleyball skill and no how, they more than make up with mental toughness and grit. Many of these players have won titles in both volleyball and basketball and just know what it takes to get it done. I don’t know if the Lions have the juice to rock it again, but it’s going to take the kitchen sink and then some to knock them out…that you can be sure.
(+2) Westerly (8 - 6) - Here comes the Boom, ready or not! Bulldogs went to the Falcon nest, grabbed the entire nest in their jowls and shook it like it was a squeezy toy from Petco. The stat line from Jack Kenyon was ridiculous…21 kills, 23 digs, 6 blocks in three sets…and to that point, Cranston West had not been touched by another club in the state. The Bulldogs caught the Falcons in what should be the plan going forward…keep Jack Kenyon on the left. Win the shoot-out with the best pin in the state and if that means getting beat in the middle, so be it. I watched that match and the confidence that every player took from knowing that Big Jack was on the left and was a huge bail out for when things went wrong…I mean jeez that’s what it’s all about. Brayman, Manfredi Jr., Wycall, and others all have grown throughout the season and played their best ball that night in Cranston West. Then it was sort of duplicated against Woonsocket, but Barrington came in and shut the door…which is ok, except moving Jack back to the middle brought you back to limited offensive production in an attempt to slow down Ciummo. Don’t like that trade off. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs made a statement and now everyone in the D2 world does not want to see them in the playoffs.
(—4) Bishop Hendricken (6 - 9) - I’ve seen it happen so many times. A team that is an underdog team, that thrives on being an underdog team, plays a team that they are no longer the underdog team…and loses the match because they don’t really know how to be the better team. This, though worded weirdly, is a skill to learn and Bishop Hendricken is a young team that has yet to learn it. They had every opportunity to put East Greenwich away, but instead got the yips in the passing game and let a team that was way more quality than the record showed to steal the match. This loss solidifies the Hawks playoff positioning and now, with only three matches left, it has to be about playoff prep over winning matches. Ramos and Warr lead this team into the future followed by Yinn and Harrington. Charles Kretzer is a solid pin that actually needs more attempts, especially when things get hairy. Narcessian, Reslow, and McCarty, when put in the right spots at the right times create a solid supporting trio. Plus, the offense run by Warr is one of the quicker and more complex strategies in the league. The Hawks could put it to another gear and be a scary opponent in the playoffs. Trust that week eight is all about prepping for just that.
(New) East Greenwich (5 - 11) - The Avengers will be the craziest seventh or eighth seed in a long time. Secretly, they have one of the best pins in the state in Dobrzanski. Dobz, when healthy, has bounce, serves tough, and can score from anywhere on the floor. To date, he’s been banged up so hasn’t played much…but he played against Hendricken and was key in that upset for the Avengers. Cole Arsenault has developed into one of the better true opposites in the state. He’s not going to kill you with his arm yet, but he’s athletic, scores better than you think, and his block does enough to slow down opposing lefts. He may arguably be the top “D” ball attacker in the state as the Avengers trust it whole heartedly. Milo Sy is starting to get it as a middle as well. Add that Max Silverman has been a setting pro for the last two years and Spencer Warburton is libero that serves the piss out of the ball, and you got yourself a team that doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to play in a win or go home scenario. It’s been a long road for the Avengers this year, but it does appear to be all coming together.
(+1) Tolman/Shea (13 - 2) - One may ask, Coach Reslow, why move up the boys from Pawtucket one and drop Central Falls one? They both had undefeated weeks and went 2 - 0 on the timeline? My answer would be…I have a gut feeling. Not a great answer, I understand that. Tolman/Shea lost to Central Falls in five-sets at the beginning of the season but there has been a lot of volleyball played since then. Granted Central Falls loss in week six was against a Jamilson-less side that Mt. Hope took advantage of…by the by, that Mt. Hope team is right there too, but still, I have this gut feeling. The volleyball cosmos is sending a message through the stars saying this is Tolman’s year and all the signs must be obeyed. Now, that’s horse hockey, and more for minor comic relief than anything else, but I will say that Pawtucket had a stronger opponent week, and something just gnaws at me. Perhaps it was the way they lost last year in the finals and knowing this is the revenge tour. Perhaps it was seeing them play and watching Baptista, Correia, Ortiz, and others do work. Not sure. Regardless Tolman and Central Falls are peas in the same pod right now and ultimately, I’m betting there is only one way to settle it.
(—1) Central Falls (13 - 1) - As mentioned above, not a real good reason to drop one other than a feeling by yours truly. Normally, I don’t succumb to feelings or premonitions, but this one is strong. I also admit that I could be totally wrong. Central Falls could meet Tolman/Shea in a match, Jamilson could go off, and the boys of Pawtucket could be swept away. They play the games for a reason and Coach Reslow has been wrong many times. Ask Ben Lind. Jamilson Almeida is the truth in D3 and has an attacking style that most teams just are unable to stop. He’s 6’5 with an arm and he’s also slicing shots to corners and through seams. So, the hype is real. Add that Lopez is a solid setter who can feed the beast effectively and you have a one / two punch that is highly effective. Theoretically speaking, this combo has yet to be stopped, though some teams have pushed them, Tolman/Shea being one of them. In the end, I’m excited to see what this team does in the playoffs, though rest assured Jamilson is probably going to need nearly 20 kills a night to get to the finals.
(New) Juanita Sanchez (12 - 3) - JS reminds me of the lead character in the Haikyu series. The little guy with a lot of bounce that has fury and fun to his persona. Is this a one for one comparison, certainly not. However, when I think of the Juanita Sanchez guys, I think of mostly young, bouncy guys, with arms that can score and that play with passion. They’ve only lost to Tolman/Shea and Central Falls (their other loss was to East Providence in a non-league match up) and the Pawtucket match was in four sets while the Central Falls one was a five-set thriller. I like the middle, Cristian Caceres, a lot, and they have other guys that do work as well like Torres and Aguilar. It’s a good, fun, hardworking team and I’m thinking perhaps this team has the juice to take to the house. Why? Because sometimes young players figure it out, forget the lights are bright and just win the whole thing. I don’t know that for certain here, but as with most things in the sports world…why not?

ResV Player of the Week…
Week 1 - Spencer Warburton (East Greenwich)
Week 2 - Jack Kenyon (Westerly)
Week 3 - Charlie Pincince (Cranston East)
Week 4 - Ryan Harrington (North Kingstown)
Week 5 - Ben Warr (Bishop Hendricken) / James Men (Classical)
Week 6 - Tom Matchett (North Smithfield)
Week 7 - Jack Kenyon (Westerly) / Ephraim Abhulime (LaSalle Academy) - Big Jack went off at Cranston West and created the biggest upset of the season. When Kenyon gets going, there are few teams in the state that can slow him down… Ephraim was huge on the week for the Rams, capped off with a 24 kills performance against the Skippers.
ResV Honorable Baller of the Week…
Week 5 - Cam Dotter (Coventry)
Week 6 - Bill Gates (South Kingstown)
Week 7 - Masiah Prak-Preaster (Coventry) - With large bounce and a big arm, Masiah causes trouble for every team the Oakers face.
Playoff Races Through Week Seven…
Division 1:
North Kingstown - Practically in a league of their own. Going to take something crazy to stop this train.
Cranston East - Home court advantage throughout the playoffs is going to serve them well.
North Smithfield - Go time is now for this collection of college ready ballers.
LaSalle Academy - Will probably have to go on the road at some point to win a playoff match which is kinda new for them.
Classical - May see LaSalle in the playoffs and that match could be bonkers.
Division 2:
Barrington - Eagles will have the second seed to the Falcons first, but they feel the team to beat now.
Cranston West - Had a tough week seven. It’ll be interesting to see how they recover going into the playoffs.
East Providence - Lepine is the Lelinchpin for this Townie side. He goes off, you go down.
Westerly - Nobody wants to play this team in the playoffs!
Lincoln - Defending champs have an upset win on the CW and that means they are right where they were last year…ready to shock the D2 world again.
Division 3:
Tolman/Shea - The boys from Pawtucket are exactly where they want to be…and vengeance is best served with a jump top spin.
Central Falls - Love that Central Falls is on the other side of the isle…they really are 1a and 1b. Should be an interesting final…if they both make it there.
Jaunita Sanchez - JS is a thorn that could make any team wilt. They’re young, bouncy, and have arms. Going to be trouble in the playoffs.
Scituate - Getting swept by Tolman hurt the cause, but this team still has grit and will be a hard out when in it matters.
Mt. Hope - If you don’t know that Mt. Hope can ball, that’s on you. They’re right in the mix and may upset a team or two when the lights are bright.
Top Fifteen Players in the State by Positions…
Note: These lists were capped at 15 due to time, but really there are more players to add from 16 to 20 to even 25! Lots of good players throughout the state this year and it’s wonderful to see!
