Week Six…Townies Rise, Eagles and Northmen Blink…

5/12/24

Happy Mother’s Day!

Thank you to all the mother’s out there who make volleyball and our volleyball community so awesome!

Dear Reader! As in Shakespeare’s Hamlet where it is mentioned…Brevity is the soul of wit…I am going to attempt to do just so in this episode. Why? Well, I wish I could cleanly say that I’m going to attempt to challenge myself by carving down everything to a single sentence, and nothing further…however, that is not the genesis of this endeavor. In fact, as with many ideas, it is necessity that breeds invention. I’ve been away…it’s mother’s day…and time is short as preparation begins for a new, and crazy, week. So, for the sake of it all, and to see if I can do it, one sentence for everything…

ResV Team of the Week…

Pin- Carlos Lora (Cranston East) - One of my partners in crime for ResV dubbed him Lora the Explorer which is actually perfect because Cranston East found significant wins once he entered the scene.

Pin- Christian Mak (Cranston West) - Though Ashton is all the rage currently, it’s best to remember that Christian is the steady hand that allows the Falcons to negate the pin and keep the opposing blockers defending the entire net.

Middle- Andrew Ramos (Bishop Hendricken) - It seems every time I look at the stats, and week six was no different, Mr. Ramos has put up 17 kills against a solid opponent.

Middle- Jimmy Ciummo (Barrington) - Bam Bam is the thermometer of how Barrington is going to fare in any particular match, and judging by the records, he’s been on point the majority of this week and the season.

Pin- Jack Kenyon (Westerly) - The Bulldogs rely on Big Jack for offense and serving prowess, which he provides in spades as Westerly clings to the fifth position in D2.

Setter- Caleb Xum (Cranston West) - With Xum at the helm, Bolts have excelled and keep pace in the attempt to put pressure on the Skippers.

Libero- Santiago Harrington (Bishop Hendricken) - Santi had another monster week with double digit digs everywhere which is now custom for the Hawk Lib.

ResV Top 15…

  1. North Kingstown (12 - 1) - They’ve proven they can win with three different setters orchestrating the offense, which means they’re winning the service battle as well as doing just fine at the net.

  2. Cranston East (10 - 3) - With emotion, athleticism, and depth, this Bolt side may be the most complete team in the history of the program…

  3. LaSalle Academy (12 - 2) - Challenging week coming up as the Rams see the Northmen, Hawks, and Skippers…a week that could define the playoffs seedings going forward.

  4. North Smithfield (9 - 3) - Huge week for the Northmen as rematching with LaSalle and North Kingstown gives an opportunity to jump to practically the head of the line…except CE has them no matter the result.

  5. Cranston West (13 - 0) - Falcons hold all the cards in D2 and they seem to keep getting better as the season goes on which Lincoln gets to see next.

  6. Classical (9 - 5) - The Purple have a final week to prep for their overall goal of taking down a top four opponent in the state.

  7. Bishop Hendricken (6 - 7) - Hawks enter the land of the Purple in that there needs to be a signature win soon and what better time then week 7?

  8. (+1) East Providence (10 - 4) - The Townies have now bested Barrington and Lincoln on their home ice, which means they now need to figure out how to win a big one on the road.

  9. (—1) Barrington (10 -4) - Eagles are holding the line, but dropping to The CW and now East Providence means their date in the finals is anything but a sure thing.

  10. Lincoln (9 - 4) - Lions live in the D2 version of the Purple in that a signature win against the league’s best is a needed boost for their playoff run.

  11. Chariho (5 - 9) - A late injury may be all she wrote for this Charger side who has been battling adversity all season…can they hold off East Greenwich?

  12. Westerly (6 - 5) - Love it when a plan comes together which feels like new life for the Bulldogs who have battled tough times as well in 2024.

  13. Cental Falls (11 - 2) - Back-to-back losses hurts the cause, though one was a scrimmage and the other was without the Kaiju, but still the top dog in my mind…though Tolman/Shea is now at their heels.

  14. Tolman/Shea (11 -2) - The boys from Pawtucket were waiting for the Knights to blink…and now they’re ready to take the pole position.

  15. Scituate (11 - 2) - Nobody suspects the crew from Scituate, and that’s just how they like it.

Receiving Votes… Portsmouth, Mt. Hope, Toll Gate, Juanita Sanchez, East Greenwich, Central

ResV Player of the Week…

Week 1 - Spencer Warburton (East Greenwich)

Week 2 - Jack Kenyon (Westerly)

Week 3 - Charlie Pincince (Cranston East)

Week 4 - Ryan Harrington (North Kingstown)

Week 5 - Ben Warr (Bishop Hendricken) / James Men (Classical)

Week 6 - Tom Matchett (North Smithfield) - The week six stats for Mr. Matchett were something else, especially the 17 kills, 7 blocks night in a loss to Cranston East!

ResV Honorable Ballers of the Week…

Week 5 - Cam Dotter (Coventry)

Week 6 - Bill Gates (South Kingstown) - Talented workhorse of the South Kingstown side, Mr. Gates does everything but take tickets…and he does it with class.

Playoff Races Through Week Six…

Division 1:

North Kingstown - Top dog till otherwise told.

Cranston East - Have clawed to the second spot with some real cool upsets.

LaSalle Academy - Defending champs are built differently from last season but it’s still in there for a crown defense.

North Smithfield - Need to thump a top three team to get the momentum they need.

Classical - One time, there Purple!

Division 2:

Cranston West - Dominating season continues and it feels like everyone is in trouble.

East Providence - Potent at home, but that road stuff needs to be figured out.

Barrington - At times they’re the toughest out in the league and others it feels like they’re one player away from taking it to the limit.

Lincoln - Do the defending champs have enough pop to make a defense?

Westerly - Can Bulldogs ride the arm of Big Jack to upset someone who doesn’t see it coming?

Division 3:

Central Falls - Couple of missteps may give the hope the others need.

Tolman/Shea - They're not going to stop until the wrongs have been avenged.

Scituate - Right in the mix and some potent pieces to make the run.

Jaunita Sanchez - Dangerous and young, which is a tough combo for opponents.

Mt. Hope - On the board, holding off Portsmouth and Toll Gate.
